South Africa's Olympic committee says South Korea President Lee Myung-bak will attend next month's IOC session in Durban in support of Pyeongchang's bid for the 2018 Winter Games.
SASCOC's Sam Ramsamy, who is also a member of the IOC, says that Lee will be present at the July 4-9 meeting in South Africa's east coast city, where the IOC will choose the host.
Pyeongchang is up against Munich and Annecy, France.
Ramsamy said German President Christian Wulff will also be present to lobby for Munich at the session, but it was still unclear if French President Nicolas Sarkozy would attend for Annecy.

South Korea hoping to be chosen as host

South Korea hoping to be chosen as host
2011. 6. 21.

South Korea is hoping that its city of PyeongChang comes up trumps when the host of the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games is announced at the 123rd International Olympic Committee (IOC) session at Durban's International Convention Centre in two weeks.
More than 2,500 sports administrators, media, business and political leaders are|expected to attend the session, with the highlight being the announcement of the 2018 winter games host city.
PyeongChang is up against two European rivals - Munich, Germany and Annecy, France. The city wants to bring the winter games to South Korea for the first time and to Asia for the third time. Both France and Germany have hosted the event previously.
The city was labelled the favourite in the bids for the 2010 and 2014 games, but was beaten by Vancouver, Canada and Sochi, Russia.
Bid chairman and Korean Air boss Yang Ho Cho said while they were very confident, they would not rest and would be campaigning until the end.
"We can't afford to relax until voting day on July 6 in Durban. The message we are sending to the IOC members is that with PyeongChang is a huge opportunity to grow winter sports in Asia - a market with huge potential. The important thing is to show that we have the capacity and the passion to host this event, and that's what we are doing," said Yang.
Bid committee operations co-ordinator Dan Moon said more than 80 percent of the South Korean population backed the bid.

PyeongChang to hold Olympic bid presentation in Togo

PyeongChang to hold Olympic bid presentation in Togo

PyeongChang, a South Korean candidate for the 2018 Winter Olympics, will hold a bid presentation before International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials next week in Togo, its bidding committee said Wednesday.
The committee said PyeongChang's two rivals, Munich in Germany and Annecy in France, will also present at the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) General Assembly next Tuesday. The committee added it will be the candidates' final joint presentation before the IOC votes on the host city at its General Assembly on July 6 in Durban, South Africa.
PyeongChang, an alpine town located about 180 kilometers east of Seoul, is bidding to host the country's first Winter Games. It came up short in two earlier bids, narrowly losing to Vancouver, Canada for the 2010 Games and to Sochi, Russia for the 2014 edition.
PyeongChang officials said Kim Yu-na, an Olympic gold medalist in ladies' figure skating and an honorary ambassador for PyeongChang, will be a presenter. Joining her will be Cho Yang-ho, head of the bidding committee, and Park Yong-sung, president of the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC).
PyeongChang has built its case around running a compact, athlete-friendly Olympics with all venues within 30 minutes of each other, and on building a new legacy for winter sports in Asia.
Japan remains the only Asian country to have hosted the Winter Olympics -- 1972 in Sapporo and 1998 in Nagano.
The candidate cities last held a joint presentation in May at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
There are 110 vote-wielding IOC members, but those from candidate cities' countries plus the IOC President Jacques Rogge aren't eligible to vote.
Rogge can only vote in case of a tie in the final round of balloting.

Kim Yu-na, Durban's Presenter

Kim Yu-na, Durban's Presenter

PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee has decided to send a delegation including Cho Yang-ho, head of the bidding committee, on 27th to present at the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) General Assembly held in Lomé, Togo.
Park Yong-sung, president of the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC), Kim Yu-na, an Olympic gold medalist in ladies' figure skating, and Na Seong-yeon, the committee's spokesperson, will join Mr.cho in making presentation about how PyeongChang is well suited to hold 2018 Winter Olympics. Kim Yu-na was supposed to fly to Durban, South Africa, next month with the main delegation on a chartered plane, but as her technical briefing at Lausanne, Switzerland was well received, it was decided that the figure skater would attend this general assembly. Also, to prepare for a visit to Togo, it was said that she got 4 innoculation shots, including one for yellow fever. To successfully win the bid, PyeongChang Bid Committee's advance delegation composed of 9 people, including Kim Dae-hyun, the planning director, and Oh Won-jong, the strategic planning manager, left on 26th. Upon the arrival the Durban, they will inspect the committee headquarters and IOC conference room so that the main delegation can get to work as soon as they arrive on July, 1st.

The Korean War (1950~1953)

The Korean War Footage from Korean side

The Korean War (1950~1953) Original Footage...(Korean Side) Although the United Nations received messages that the North Koreans were about to invade, all were rejected. The United States received less than two weeks notice of the Korean War—the Chinese-authorized, North Korean invasion of the South on 25 June 1950. The CIA provided the early notice; before the war, in early 1950, CIA China station officer Douglas Mackiernan received Chinese and North Korean intelligence forecasting the summer KPA attack on the South so as to unify the country. Earlier, after the US missions had left the communist People's Republic of China, he volunteered to remain and conduct spy operations. Afterward, he and a team of CIA local mercenaries then escaped the Chinese, in a months-long horse trek across the Himalaya mountains; he was killed within miles of Lhasa, Tibet — yet his team delivered the intelligence to headquarters. Thirteen days later, the North Korean People's Army (KPA) crossed the 38th-parallel border and invaded South Korea. Mackiernan was posthumously awarded the CIA Intelligence Star for valor. Under the guise of counter-attacking a South Korean provocation raid, the North Korean Army (KPA) crossed the 38th parallel, behind artillery fire, at Sunday dawn of 25 June 1950. The KPA said that Republic of Korea Army (ROK Army) troops, under command of the régime of the "bandit traitor Syngman Rhee", had crossed the border first—and that they would arrest and execute Rhee. In the past year, both Korean armies had continually harassed each other with skirmishes—and each continually raided the other country across the 38th-parallel border, as in a civil war. Hours later, the United Nations Security Council unanimously condemned the North Korean invasion of the Republic of South Korea (ROK), with UNSC Resolution 82, so adopted despite the USSR, a veto-wielding power, boycotting the Council meetings since January—protesting that the (Taiwan) Republic of China, and not the (mainland) People's Republic of China held a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. On 27 June 1950, President Truman ordered US air and sea forces to help the South Korean régime. After debating the matter, the Security Council, on 27 June 1950, published Resolution 83 recommending member-state military assistance to the Republic of Korea. Incidentally, while awaiting the Council's fait accompli announcement to the UN, the Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister accused the US of starting armed intervention in behalf of South Korea. The USSR challenged the legitimacy of the UN-approved war, because (i) the ROK Army intelligence upon which Resolution 83 is based came from US Intelligence; (ii) North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) was not invited as a sitting temporary member of the UN, which violated UN Charter Article 32; and (iii) the Korean warfare was beyond UN Charter scope, because the initial NorthSouth border fighting was classed as civil war. Moreover, the Soviet representative boycotted the UN to prevent Security Council action, to challenge the legitimacy of UN action; legal scholars posited that deciding upon an "action" required the unanimous vote of the five permanent members. The North Korean Army launched the "Fatherland Liberation War" with a comprehensive airland invasion using 231,000 soldiers, who captured scheduled objectives and territory—among them, Kaesŏng, Chuncheon, Uijeongbu, and Ongjin—which they achieved with 274 T-34-85 tanks, some 150 Yak fighters, 110 attack bombers, 200 artillery pieces, 78 Yak trainers, and 35 reconnaissance aircraft.[45] Additional to the invasion force, the KPA had 114 fighters, 78 bombers, 105 T-34-85 tanks, and some 30,000 soldiers stationed in North Korea. At sea, although comprising only several small warships, the North Korean and South Korean navies fought in the war as sea-borne artillery for their in-country armies. In contrast, the ROK Army defenders were unprepared. In South to the Naktong, North to the Yalu (1998), R.E. Applebaum reports the ROK forces' low combat readiness on 25 June 1950. The ROK Army had 98,000 soldiers (65,000 combat, 33,000 support), no tanks, and a twenty-two piece air force comprising 12 liaison-type and 10 AT6 advanced-trainer airplanes. There were no large foreign military garrisons in Korea at invasion time—but there were large US garrisons and air forces in Japan.[45] Within days of the invasion, masses of ROK Army soldiers—of dubious loyalty to the Syngman Rhee régime—either were retreating southwards or were defecting en masse to the Communist North, to the KPA.

How to make traditional Korean rice cake (gyung dan)

Full recipe here: http://blog.maangchi.com/2008/03/rice-cake-gyung-dan.html
There are many different kinds of rice cake, but I'm going to introduce gyung dan to you. On special occasions, the first thing my mom and grandmother did was to prepare rice cake, so this is what I'm going to show you.

Ingredients:
1. 2 cups of sweet rice flour (Mochiko powder)
2. 3/4 cup of boiling water (or 1 cup)
3. salt, sugar, brown sugar
4. 1 cups of red beans
5. 1 ts of cinnamon powder
6. black sesame seeds powder
7. mugwort powder
8. toasted yellow soy bean powder, and 1 or 2 cups of flour
Step 1:
Make red bean paste
1. In a pot, place 1 cup of washed red beans and 4 cups of water and heat it over high heat for 10 minutes.
2. Lower the heat to low medium and simmer for 50 minutes.
3. Check if the beans are cooked fully. Remove extra water from the beans and crush them with a wooden spoon.
4. Add 1 cup of brown sugar, 1 ts of salt, 1 ts of cinnamon powder into the red bean paste and set it aside.
Step 2:
Prepare 3 bowls where 3 different kinds of powder will be placed for the rice cake balls
1. Black sesame seeds:
Rinse and drain ½ cup of black sesame seeds in running water using a strainer.
Heat a pan over medium heat and pour in the sesame seeds.
Cook the sesame seeds by stirring with a wooden spoon.
The sesame seeds will pop, then lower the heat and keep stirring until they are crispy. (5- 10 minutes)
When the sesame seeds cool down, grind them with a coffee grinder.
Transfer the sesame seeds powder to a bowl and add 2 tbs sugar and a pinch of salt and mix it.
2. Put ½ cup of toasted soybean powder (kong gaa ru in Korean) in a bowl and add 2
tbs of sugar and a pinch of salt and mix it.
3. Put ½ cup of mugwort powder (ssook gaa ru in Korean) in a bowl and add 2
tbs of sugar and a pinch of salt and mix it
Step 3:
Make rice cake dough.
1. In a bowl, place 2 cups of sweet rice powder, 2 tbs of sugar, 1 ts of salt.
2. Pour 2/3 cup of hot water little by little while you are mixing it with a spoon
3. Mix the dough by hand.
*tips: if you feel the dough is too wet, add some plain flour
4. Put the rice cake dough into a plastic bag and set it aside

Step 4:
In a big pot, place a lot of water and boil it
Let's make rice cake!
1. Take the rice cake dough out from the plastic bag and place it on the cutting board.
Tip: To protect the dough from being stuck to the board, sprinkle some plain flour before placing the rich cake dough.
2. Divide the dough into 2 and roll each one to make cylinder shape and cut it into 18-20 pieces.
3. Roll each piece of rice dough with your hands and make a hole in the middle of the ball with your thumb. Then turn the ball into a cup.
4. Put the bean paste into the middle.
5. Close it tightly and place it on a plate.
Tip: While you are making rice balls, the rest of dough may get dried, so cover them with wet cloth or paper towel.
6. Carefully put all the rice cake balls into boiling water. When the rice cake balls are cooked, they float. It will take about 3 -5 minutes until they float.
7. Prepare lots of cold water in a big bowl.
8. Put the cooked rice balls into cold water and drain them.
9. Roll the cooked rice balls in the 3 different colors of powder and transfer them to a plate.
Enjoy it!

HOW-TO: Introduce your family to Korean cuisine

Today is May 2nd, 2010.
On this day, 46 years ago, my grandparents were married.
To celebrate, I decided to make them a Korean meal! Before today, they had never tried Korean food, so I figured what better way than to make them a meal myself!

I made Bulgogi, Kimchi Bokkeumbap, Mandu and Hobakjeon (Mmmm...)

They seemed to enjoy it, so I suppose it was a success!

(They failed at using chopsticks, though. I guess I'll have to work on teaching them that next.)

Let me introduce Korea,in seoul

Yu-Na Kim interview in English in NYC (October 2010)

Yu-Na Kim attended the 31st Annual Salute to Women in Sports which was held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. From http://www.lifeskate.com/skate/2010/10/yu-na-kim-honored-and-inspired-video.html. This is an event hosted by the Women's Sports Foundation, an organization founded by legendary tennis great Billie Jean King to help and inspire young girls everywhere to reach their dreams. In all, more than 60 world-class athletes from track and field to golf to swimming to snowboarding -- you name the sport, the crème de la crème were there -- came together under one roof to celebrate women's accomplishments and contributions to sports.

Figure skating was well represented by Yu-Na Kim, Michelle Kwan and Sarah Hughes. Interestingly, Michelle is a past recipient of a Women's Sports Foundation scholarship so this organization is near and dear to her heart. Here is my conversation with Yu-Na and we talk about her recent move to Los Angeles from Toronto, her coaching change from Brian Orser to Peter Oppegard, and her idol Michelle Kwan. First of all, just to refresh, the Spirra is powered by a modified Hyundai V8 engine to the tune of 500 hp and can hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds totally on par with other supercars from Germany and Italy. CNN interprets this as proof that the Korean automarket has come of age, causing one analyst to comment that the Spirra is a way of saying, "Hey we can make a $100,000 supercar, too."

Great Korean Food

Earlier this week I ate some great Korean food at a restaurant in Kobe. Unlike many Korean restaurants in Japan that serve a "fusion" style of food, this was straight up real Korean grub! It was awesome. We ate "gamjatang" 감자탕 (a spicey pork and potatoe soup) and "pajeon" 파전 (a green onion pancake). They also had my favorite "kimchi" 김치.
